So you just got home with 40+ lbs of winter squash, onions, garlic, carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes and a few other surprises. How do you keep all this bounty fresh for as long as possible? Here is a link to a very useful table on just such a subject. The most important figures to pay attention to are temperature and humidity. Enjoy and happy holidays!

The Final count down! (Last week of pickups)
It is with mixed feelings that we enter the last week of the
CSA share distribution. Although we are
very much looking forward to a good long hibernation to recharge our batteries,
we are also very sad to be parting ways with so many great friends. To our CSA membership, to our volunteers and
to our crew, thank you so much for all that you have brought to and brought out
at Appleton Farms this year. We hope to
hear from you and see many of you over the winter. We hope that you will join us again in the
spring.
The big news for this week came in last night. A lovely wintery mix to send us off this
season! Of all the mixes “wintery” is my
least favorite. We covered many of our
sensitive crops with frost clothe but with wind and wet snow we can’t be
certain how everything faired until the snow melts off. Make sure to thank your shareroom farmer this
week because washing vegetables in this weather is brutally uncomfortable.
A few Thanksgiving shares are still available. Although it is tough to say exactly when we
will sell out it is a safe bet that it will be before the end of the week. The Thanksgiving share pickup will be held on
Monday November 17th this year from 2pm until 6pm. Instructions on how to best store your winter
vegetables will be included with your pickup.
You may have noticed our leaflet about renewals in the share
room last week. It is true; Appleton
Farms CSA is finally joining the 21st century and going for
paperless online signups. Since we will be
emailing you further details about the signup process it is very important that
you provide us with your current preferred email address. You can do this at the CSA check in desk this
week. Please print as clearly as
possible. Thanks for your assistance and
understanding during this transition.
