Week 2: It's Great to be Back!

Week 2

It was great to see so many happy shareholders back on the farm last week and to greet a few new members as well. We are reaching the busier months of the season, with harvest in full swing and plenty of transplanting and weeding to continue. This week we finished putting out the last large plantings of winter squash and watermelon, and we are already seeding fall broccoli and cauliflower in the greenhouse! The weather has been warm and the days beautiful, which makes weed control a bit easier. The lack of rain is slightly concerning and forced me to tune up our water reel irrigation system. With hot weather in the forecast, we will be getting water on the fields if rain doesn’t come soon!

The share this week:

Mixed greens
Curly kale
Leaf lettuce
Head lettuce
Beets
Radishes
Turnips
Kohl rabi
Broccoli
Scallions
PYO strawberries
PYO peas

As a reminder, our hours for pickup have changed to Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 12:30-6:30PM. We are also open for pick your own on Saturdays, 8AM-Noon. Shareholders are free to pick up their share any day that best suits their schedule, and do not need to commit to the same day each week. Additionally, shareholders do not need to tell us which day they will be picking up.

Vegetable of the week!

KOHLRABI is another vegetable of the brassica family, related to broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower. It is a fast growing plant, with leaves growing from a bulbous stem that makes it look like a turnip growing on top of the ground. It is high in vitamin C and it’s a good source of fiber and potassium. It is recommended to peel away the tough outer skin before enjoying it raw or cooked.

Kohlrabi, two ways:

CHIPS
Ingredients: kohlrabi, olive oil, salt
Directions: Toss thinly sliced, unpeeled kohlrabi with olive oil and lay on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 250 degrees, rotating sheet often. Cooking until deeply golden, 35 minutes to and hour. Transfer to paper towel lined plant and sprinkle with salt.

SLAW
Ingredients: 2 cups peeled shredded kohlrabi, 1 cup peeled shredded beets, ¼ cup mayonnaise, 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1 tbsp honey, ½ tsp dijon, ½ tsp salt, ¼ cup parsley, ½ cup golden raisins and chopped apple
Directions: Whisk together the mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, dijon, honey and salt. Pour over kohlrabi and beets. Stir in parsley, apples, and raisins. Mix well and enjoy!
